Tiger safari in India: the best months and parks
The best time for a tiger safari in India is between November and April, and January to March is an excellent window. The reserves are open, days are dry and pleasant, and the forest thins as spring arrives. Ranthambore, Kanha and Bandhavgarh are the strongest choices, each with very different character.
When are India’s tiger reserves open?
Most of India’s tiger reserves open their core zones after the monsoon, usually from 1 October, and close them again at the end of June. From July to September the core forests rest. Only some buffer zones open, and then not reliably.
Within the season, the months feel quite different:
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| October | Parks reopen; the forest is green and dense, and sightings can take patience |
| November to February | Cool, clear and comfortable; early mornings can be cold in an open jeep |
| March to April | Warmer days; the cover thins and animals come to water, so sightings often improve |
| May to June | Very hot; good sightings, but hard going for most travellers |
Parks also have weekly and occasional closures for some zones or drives. We plan your days around these so that no safari is wasted.
Is January to March a good time for a tiger safari?
Yes. It is the time we most often recommend, particularly if you are combining wildlife with Rajasthan or the Taj Mahal.
- January: crisp mornings and comfortable afternoons. It is the coolest month, so bring warm layers for the early drives.
- February: the most settled weather of the year, pleasant across central and northern India.
- March: warmer, with thinning cover. Animals come to water more often, and from March onwards sightings are often at their best.
The same months are ideal for Rajasthan’s forts and palaces and for the Golden Triangle, which makes a single, unhurried journey easy to arrange.
Which tiger reserve should you choose?
There is no single best reserve. Each one offers something different, and many travellers choose two.
Ranthambore, Rajasthan

Tigers move through dry forest, lakes and the ruins of a 10th-century fort. Ranthambore is the easiest reserve to combine with Jaipur, Agra and the rest of Rajasthan, so it suits a first safari within a wider journey. It is popular, so permits for the best zones need booking early.
Kanha, Madhya Pradesh
Kanha has wide sal forests and open meadows, and is home to the rare hard-ground barasingha. It is the largest reserve in Madhya Pradesh and has a calmer, more spacious feel. Read our guide to Kanha National Park.
Bandhavgarh, Madhya Pradesh
A smaller reserve of hills, grassland and an ancient fort. It pairs naturally with Kanha, a drive of several hours away. We usually suggest three nights in each.
Pench and Satpura, for something quieter
Pench and Satpura see fewer vehicles. Satpura also allows walking safaris, so it suits travellers who want to experience the forest itself rather than focus on a single sighting.
| Reserve | Character | Pairs well with | Getting there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ranthambore | Fort ruins, lakes, dry forest | Jaipur, Agra, Rajasthan | By road from Jaipur or Agra |
| Kanha | Meadows, sal forest, barasingha | Bandhavgarh, Khajuraho | Fly to Jabalpur, then drive |
| Bandhavgarh | Hills, grassland, fort | Kanha, Khajuraho | By road from Kanha or Jabalpur |
| Pench / Satpura | Quieter forest, walking safaris | Kanha | By road |
Where will you stay?
Safari days start before dawn, so the lodge matters more than on most journeys. On our tiger safaris we usually suggest:
- Banjaar Tola, a Taj Safari, in Kanha
- Mahua Kothi, a Taj Safari, in Bandhavgarh
- The Oberoi Vanyavilas in Ranthambore, or Taj Sawai Madhopur Lodge as part of a Rajasthan journey
Each is designed for rest between drives, with good food, quiet rooms and space to do very little in the middle of the day. We confirm every hotel with you before booking.
How many safaris do you need?

We suggest at least four to six drives in a reserve, or two to three nights, to give yourself a fair chance. Most days have a morning and an afternoon drive. You can skip any drive you like. Three nights in each of two reserves is a comfortable rhythm for a dedicated safari.
Permits are limited by zone and vehicle numbers, and they sell out for January to March. We book them as soon as your dates are settled. For more privacy, you can reserve an exclusive jeep for your party.
How do you combine a safari with the rest of India?
A tiger reserve fits naturally into a wider journey:
- Golden Triangle with Ranthambore: Delhi, Agra, two or three nights in Ranthambore, then Jaipur. See our Golden Triangle tour and ask us to add Ranthambore.
- Rajasthan in palace hotels: our Rajasthan tour includes Ranthambore between Agra and Jaipur.
- A dedicated wildlife journey: our tiger safari through Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Ranthambore spends 19 days in three reserves, with Khajuraho, the Taj Mahal and Jaipur in between.
For the rest of the year, see our guide to the best time to visit India.
What should you bring?
- Warm layers, a hat and gloves for January mornings; light, neutral-coloured clothing for March.
- A scarf or buff against dust, and sunglasses.
- Binoculars, and a camera with a zoom lens if you enjoy photography.
- Quiet, comfortable shoes. Bright colours and perfume are best left at the lodge.
Frequently asked questions
Are tiger sightings guaranteed?
No. Tigers are wild animals in large forests, and no honest operator can promise a sighting. Several days across one or two strong reserves give you a good chance, and the forests are rich in leopards, deer, sloth bears and birds.
What is the best month for a tiger safari in India?
For comfort and good sightings together, February and March are hard to beat. Sightings often improve further in April and May, but the heat makes those months tiring for most travellers.
Is a tiger safari suitable for families and older travellers?
Yes. The drives are in open jeeps on forest tracks, with early starts. The lodges are built for rest in between, and you can do as many or as few drives as you like. Tell us about any mobility needs and we will plan around them.
Ranthambore or Kanha: which is better?
Ranthambore is easier to combine with Rajasthan and the Taj Mahal. Kanha feels larger and more remote. If you have the time, the two make a fine pair.
How far ahead should I book a January to March safari?
As early as you can. Safari permits and the best lodges fill first for these months, so we suggest starting to plan several months ahead.
